Why does reusing second-hand clothing matter? ππ
Kids grow fast — sometimes they outgrow an outfit after just one wear! π
Sadly, most of those barely-worn clothes end up in landfill.
In NZ, that’s around 180,000 tonnes of clothing waste every year (roughly 6,400 shipping containers full!) Globally, 85% of textiles end up in landfill, and the fashion industry creates 10% of all carbon emissions π¬
That’s why at The Clothing Project, we’re so passionate about giving children’s clothes a second (and third!) life. Keeping them out of landfill and reducing the demand for new production.
Every reused item means less waste, fewer resources, and a lighter footprint for our planet π
Donate, swap, buy second-hand, repair, pass it on. Every little bit helps slow down fast fashion.

π Volunteer Morning Tea! π
What an absolutely beautiful morning we had celebrating our incredible volunteers! π It’s not often we get so many of our amazing helpers together in one place, so this was such a special, joy-filled gathering (even though a few couldn’t make it — you were missed!).
We spent the morning sharing stories, chatting about what we love most about The Clothing Project, and reflecting on the mahi that connects us all. The energy in the room was just pure warmth and aroha. π₯°
And then… MANNA CAFE absolutely outdid themselves! π°β The spread was beyond incredible — the presentation was stunning, and every bite was delicious. If you’re ever passing through Edgecumbe, do yourself a favour and stop in at this gorgeous cafe. Huge thanks to Ali and the team for putting together such a thoughtful and even allergen-friendly selection — you’re amazing! π Just check out the photos to see the absolute deliciousness!!! πππ
Moments like this remind us why our volunteers truly are the heart of The Clothing Project. Your kindness, laughter, and dedication ripple out to make a real difference for tamariki and whΔnau across the Eastern Bay.
We’re back to mahi next Wednesday, but today was all about gratitude — and celebrating the incredible people who make what we do possible. You all rock! π

π Calling all Friday heroes! π
We are in real need of Friday volunteers! Just a couple of hours on a Friday morning can make a huge difference for tamariki and whΔnau in the Eastern Bay. π
We know time is precious, so even if you can only spare a few hours once a month, it would be such a big help.
π§Ί Tasks include:
- Sorting through donations
- Sorting stock boxes
- Packing parcels for orders
Who can help?
All ages, all genders, all activity and ability levels — everyone is welcome! π
We also love seeing mamas with pepi, and little ones who are happy to play nearby while we crack on.
π
When: Friday mornings, term time only — so school holidays are all yours!
π Interested? Give Kai a call on 021-070-2908 or email office@theclothingproject.co.nz to find out more.
Even a little bit of your time can make a big difference — come join the mahi and be part of something really special! π

π A big call-out for size 3–5 clothing! SPREAD THE WORD! π
Right now, we’re running very low on clothing for 3, 4 and 5-year-olds, and the demand for these ages has been huge lately.
If you have any good quality clothing in these sizes — things that are clean, tidy and free from stains or marks (we know that can be tricky at this age!) — we’d be so grateful to receive them. πππ
These items go straight into clothing parcels for local tamariki who need them most, helping them feel warm, comfy, and cared for. π₯°
You can drop donations to any of our collection points:
π WhakatΔne – Plunket (Victoria Street) or StitchTec Embroidery (Commerce Street)
π Edgecumbe – Peppers Building Supplies (Main Street)
π Εhope – Little Moments Homebased Childcare Office (West End)
Every single piece makes a difference — thank you for helping us wrap more little ones in kindness. π

How we aim for minimal waste β»οΈ
With fast fashion sending so much clothing to landfill, we do everything we can to give your donations a second (or third!) life:
π Quality children’s clothing goes straight to local whΔnau who need it.
𧩠Items with minor marks or unsuitable prints head to local op shops.
π¨ Well-loved 0–6 clothes become “kindy boxes” for messy play at childcare centres.
π¦ Our parcels are sent out in cardboard boxes (reused whenever possible), and extras go out in paper bags.
ποΈ The boxes that donations arrive in get reused or broken down and recycled, and bags get passed onto local op shops.
π§ Clothing that’s too worn is cut into rags for local tradies.
Every donation helps us reduce waste while providing dignity to families. By choosing to give, you’re keeping clothing in use and out of landfill. π
And if you have any suggestions on how we can further reduce our waste impact, please let us know in the comments!! πππ

π A huge thank you to Z Energy and our amazing community! π
This morning we attended the Good in the Hood donation ceremony at Z WhakatΔne to celebrate the incredible community support that took place over August and September.
It was such a joy to meet other wonderful local charities and organisations doing amazing mahi in our rohe. We’re absolutely blown away by the generosity shown! Every single one of you who popped an orange token into our box at Z Awakeri has helped make a real difference. π§‘
It might seem like a small act, but the impact for us is huge — your support helps us keep local tamariki warm, clothed, and cared for. ππ
Congratulations to all the other incredible groups who received their donations today, from WhakatΔne, Awakeri and Kawerau Z Stations. What an inspiring community we have! And of course, a massive thank you to Z Energy for running Good in the Hood again this year and continuing to uplift local organisations like ours. πβ¨
