Winter clothing is about so much more than staying warm 💛
Recently, we were reading research from Oranga Tamariki that highlighted just how important appropriate clothing is for tamariki wellbeing — physically, emotionally, socially, and educationally.
The research found that lacking warm, appropriate clothing can impact children in so many ways:
❄️ Increased vulnerability to illness
❄️ Feeling embarrassed or ashamed
❄️ Bullying and teasing at school
❄️ Barriers to participating in sports and activities
❄️ Feeling socially excluded from peers
❄️ Difficulty fully participating at school and in everyday life
Something as simple as a warm jacket, dry shoes, clean leggings, or a cozy jersey can help a child feel safe, included, confident, and cared for.
That’s why the mahi our community does matters so deeply. Every donation we receive helps ensure local tamariki have access to clothing that keeps them warm, comfortable, and able to participate fully in childhood 💛
As winter settles in, we’re so grateful to everyone who continues donating, volunteering, sharing our posts, and supporting our kaupapa. You are helping create dignity, warmth, and belonging for local whānau.

BRRRR… it’s definitely starting to feel like winter out there! ❄️
As the temperatures drop, more local tamariki are needing access to warm winter clothing — and right now, we’re especially short on girls’ clothing in sizes 4 & 5.
We’re looking for good quality, clean clothing with lots of life left in it — no stains or tears please. Warm pants, leggings, singlets, jackets, jerseys, cardigans, tights, shorts, warm dresses, long sleeve tops, tees… anything cozy and practical is so appreciated!
Every donation helps keep a local child warm this winter, and we’re so grateful for the incredible support from our community 💛
I’ve been putting together a presentation recently for some meetings with local community groups that I’ve got coming up, and it got me wondering just how much of our process happens behind the scenes! 💛
Our community is incredible and donates so many amazing clothing items to us, and most people know that we provide gift boxes to local tamariki… but what actually happens in between!?
Here’s a very simple little breakdown of how your donations make their way from our shelves to local whānau...
Every item that comes through our doors is sorted with care by our volunteers — weighed, checked, washed if needed, packed into gift boxes, and passed on through our amazing partner organisations who work directly with families in need.
And even the items we can’t use still get a second life wherever possible ♻️
We’re so proud that together, our community is supporting local whānau while also helping keep textiles out of landfill It really does take a village — and we’re endlessly grateful to everyone who donates, volunteers, or supports us along the way 💛
We need more helping hands! 💛
Right now we’re so lucky to be receiving an incredible amount of donated children’s clothing from our amazing community — while at the same time, requests for support from local whānau keep coming in.
The challenge is simple… we’re short on volunteers to help us get the mahi done behind the scenes.
Every item needs to be sorted, checked, folded, sized, and lovingly packed into gift boxes for tamariki who need them. And at the moment, we just don’t have enough hands to keep up with the need.
If you’ve got a couple of spare hours on a Wednesday or Friday morning, we would truly love your support. No experience needed — just a willingness to jump in and be part of something meaningful.
We’re a welcoming and inclusive space for all ages, genders, and abilities — everyone is welcome here 💕
Babies are welcome (we’ve got a playpen and baby-wearing friendly volunteers!)
Preschoolers are welcome too with toys and colouring in to keep them busy
Older homeschooled kids keen to give back? They’re welcome as well!
It’s a friendly, supportive space with good kōrero, plenty of laughs, and the chance to make a real difference for local tamariki and whānau 💛
May absolutely blew us away 🤍
Not only was it our biggest donation month so far, but we also continued to see our community show up with so much kindness, generosity, and support for local tamariki and whānau.
✨ May impact:
• 17 orders received for whānau in need
• 22 gift boxes packed
• 45 gift boxes delivered to their recipient tamariki
• 70+ volunteer hours
• 229.93kg of donations received 🎉
AND that’s on top of the incredible support from the recent 1XX PJ Drive
Through that amazing community effort, over:
🧸 500 pairs of pyjamas
🧥 150 winter warm clothing items
were donated to help keep local children warm this winter.
Every item donated, every volunteer hour, and every share of our posts helps us support more families in our community.
Thank you for continuing to stand behind our kaupapa and help us create a welcoming, caring space for everyone who walks through our doors 🤍
You may have seen our name around the community a little more lately 👀💛
From our recent movie fundraiser to the amazing 1XX Pyjama Drive held in support of us, we’ve been completely blown away by the support, generosity, and aroha from our community lately.
We’ve also had lots of new followers join us recently, so we thought we’d properly introduce ourselves ✨
We’re a small charitable organisation based in Edgecumbe, supporting whānau across the Eastern Bay of Plenty.
Our kaupapa is simple:
Making sure tamariki have access to clean, quality, seasonally appropriate clothing — because every child deserves to feel warm, confident, cared for, and able to thrive 💛
The clothing we provide comes from generous donations from our local community. Every item is sorted with care by our volunteers, then packed into beautifully branded gift boxes and passed on through our partner organisations to local whānau who need them most.
And honestly, our volunteers are the magic behind it all ✨
From sorting donations and packing boxes, to helping at events and spreading the word about our mahi — we couldn’t do this without them.
Everything we do comes back to community.
We are of the community, for the community
A little fun fact too:
The Clothing Project was founded right here in Edgecumbe in 2013 by a local mama who saw a need for children’s clothing support for families who didn’t have that village around them. How special is that? 💛
Thank you for being here and supporting our mahi. Every donation, share, volunteer hour, and kind word helps us continue supporting local tamariki and whānau.
And if you'd like to join us as a volunteer, find out what other ways you can help, or just want to learn more - please get in touch!!! (We're a friendly bunch, honest!)

We’d love your help connecting with more local midwives 💛
At The Clothing Project, we work to make sure pēpi across the Eastern Bay have access to clean, warm, good quality clothing and essentials — and we know midwives are often some of the very first people supporting whānau who may need a helping hand.
We’re especially hoping to connect with independent midwives and those working with smaller organisations across Whakatāne, Kawerau, Ōpōtiki and surrounding communities. We already have a wonderful relationship with Ko Matariki Maternity Unit at Whakatāne Hospital, and would love to widen our reach even further.
If you know a midwife who would be interested in working alongside us, please share or tag them below 👇
Or encourage them to get in touch with us via DM, email, or phone call.
Together, we can help keep local babies warm, safe, and cared for this winter 🧸🧺
When it comes to gifting our beautiful clothing boxes to local whānau, we’re usually very much behind the scenes. Every order is put through and delivered through our incredible partner organisations, so we don’t often get to hear directly from the families receiving them.
That’s why this beautiful message from a very grateful mama meant so much to us. Alongside her message were the most gorgeous photos of her tamariki excitedly going through their boxes and trying on all their “new” clothes — and honestly, I sat in my car and cried.
Being able to share moments like this with our amazing volunteers is incredibly special too. So much care, time, and aroha goes into every single gift box we pack, and hearing that it’s truly felt and appreciated means the world.
Knowing that a child is opening their box with excitement, feeling warm, confident, and proud in their cool new clothes — that’s exactly why we do what we do. 💛

We’ve been absolutely blown away by the generosity from our community lately — thank you so much to everyone who has donated 💛
Right now though, we’re really struggling to complete our gift boxes for tamariki aged 3–5 years. We currently have over 11 requests for 5-year-olds waiting to be filled, but we simply don’t have enough stock in those sizes!!
If you have any clean, mark-free children’s clothing tucked away that your little ones have outgrown, we would be so grateful for your help.
We especially need sizes 3–5 in:
🧥 Coats & jackets
👕 Tee shirts & long sleeve tops
👖 Warm pants
👗 Warm dresses
🧶 Warm jerseys
❄️ Singlets for layering
🧢 Winter hats (especially age 5+)
Every donation helps us keep local tamariki warm this winter ❤️
Please help by donating or sharing this post to help us spread the word!

Do you know a local kindergarten, daycare, kōhanga, or preschool that could use some extra clothes? 👕🧸
We provide completely FREE “Kindy Clothes” boxes to childcare facilities across Whakatāne, Kawerau, Ōpōtiki and surrounding communities 💛
These boxes are filled with pre-loved clothing that may be stained, well-worn, or no longer suitable for our gift boxes — but are still absolutely perfect for messy play, muddy puddles, paint days, toileting accidents, or little ones who simply need a spare change of clothes while at kindy.
If you work at, attend, or know of a local childcare centre that would benefit from a Kindy Clothes box, please tag them below or encourage them to get in touch with us via DM, email, or phone call 📩
We’d love to help make sure local tamariki always have something warm and practical to wear while they learn, play, and explore 🌈
